"We are all more than our mistakes" Interview with Dan Brewer

MEET ARTIST DAN BREWER:

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CRAFT? Plotting great scads of points derived from fractal algorithms, seeing what they remind me of and then isolating the bits that entertain me.

DESCRIBE ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS AS AN ARTIST. It was very rewarding when at our opening when one man heard my description of my art and understood the place of pattern recognition as an individual interpretation of shared human character traits.

WHAT INSPIRES OR MOTIVATES YOUR WORK CURRENTLY? Happiness

and pleasure for myself and others. I mean, try to be happy; what have you to lose?

WHAT ARTISTS OR PEOPLE HAVE INFLUENCED YOUR

PRACTICE? Certainly Betsy Bloomfield has helped me reach past my navel and try to contribute to (all of) our evolution.

AT THIS MOMENT WITH COVID-19, HOW CAN THE ARTS HELP?

Distraction is welcome just now. Art helps us remember that we are all more than our mistakes. And that we are not in this alone.

HOW HAS THIS SITUATION HIT YOUR CRAFT AND HOW CAN WE HELP YOU?

I’ve been displayed in two different galleries over the month of March. Both are shut down. More important than the exposure for my art, the community involvement with the Blue Whole Gallery in Sequim and the Collaboration Coffee House in Yakima are bright spots. Supporting the small city venues, adds to the social cohesiveness they promote.

POST COVID-19, WHAT DO YOU HOPE CHANGES? WHAT ROLE DO YOU THINK THE ARTS MIGHT PLAY?

Just keep steering us toward nature, that we might remember who and what we are.

WHAT IS ONE CREATIVE PRACTICE FOR ANY LEVEL ARTIST THAT YOU RECOMMEND FOR OUR READERS AT THIS TIME? Breathe. Wait. The inspiration will return. Be kind to yourself, also.

WHAT WERE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO THAT YOU’RE NO LONGER WORRIED ABOUT NOW?

Three weeks ago, I wondered if the showing of my art would demand too much time. Now, not so much.

HOW CAN PEOPLE CONNECT FIND MORE OF YOUR WORK?
